Let's get Medieval!

The MSSA is an official UNM organization comprised of graduate and undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines and majors who have a common interest: medieval studies and all related topics. The MSSA welcomes students from any major or discipline who are interested in the medieval period.

Our mission as an academic organization is to promote scholarship in medieval studies, both within the UNM community and the greater Albuquerque area. To that end, we organize a number of activities, such as:

  • hosting colloquia each semester, giving undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to present papers on topics that range from Anglo-Saxon poetry to modern interpretations of medieval motifs.
  • supporting the scholarly activities of the UNM Institute for Medieval Studies, such as the Spring Lecture Series.
  • peer mentoring and lecturing through community and high school outreach programs.
  • campus activities such as our Movie (K)nights film festival and celebration of Hildegard von Bingen's canonization.

IMS/MSSA Spring Lecture Series Speakers Reception
Tuesday April 14, 12:00 - 2:00pm
SUB Fiesta A & B

Every year, the rock star scholars who present at the Spring Lecture Series are treated to receptions where faculty, graduate students, and Friends of Medieval Studies members have a chance to meet them, speak to them about their presentations and publications, and just hang out with the people who are writing the books that change the field.  This year, the MSSA is sponsoring another reception: one that features the UNM Medieval Studies undergraduates, giving them access to these speakers in a way that, up until now, has not been possible.  Why?  Because the MSSA is full to the brim with outstanding undergraduate scholars who deserve a chance to meet these figures and speak to them about their common interests and ideas.

MSSA will provide a light lunch (vegetarian and meatitarian options appropriate for the occasion) and beverages.  All you have to do is RSVP to Dr. Graham (tgraham@unm.edu) by Thursday at 5:00 to let us know you're coming (we need to order enough food).  Again, this event is the first time the speakers have been made available specificaly to the MSSA undergraduates; if you'd like to meet Martin Foys, Christopher Kleinhenz, Benjamin W. Anderson, and Laura A. Smoller, or indeed if you'd like to make sure that we have this opportunity in future years, make sure that you RSVP to Dr. Graham today!
